摘要
I&C systems in nuclear power plants need to be upgraded over the lifetime of the plant in a reliable and cost-effective manner. Upgrading allows utilities to replace obsolete equipment, to reduce O&M costs, to improve plant performance, and to maintain safety. The major drivers for the replacement of the safety, control, and information systems in nuclear plants are the obsolescence of the existing hardware and the need for more cost-effective power production. Preparation for the coming deregulated environment dictates more cost-effective power production as a necessity for corporate survival. And O&M costs that continue to grow because of obsolesence issues are counter to the needs for more cost-effective power production and improved competitiveness. EPRI and its member nuclear utilities are working together on an industry-wide I&C program to address I&C issues and to develop cost-effective solutions.
