Appropriating Mia Couto: Language, identity and 'lusofonia'

Using the example of Mia Couto, this article explores how the dominance of European institutions in the field of African literature influences the work of African authors and explains how some critics analyse and 'appropriate' African literature for their own national cultural references. In this way, colonial myths are perpetuated.
