In this work we calculate the magnetocaloric effect in the doped compounds ((R1-cRc eta)-R-alpha)Ni-2, where R-alpha and R-eta stand for rare earth elements. The calculated isothermal entropy change and the adiabatic temperature change upon variations of the applied magnetic field, for the compounds (Er1-cDyc)Ni-2 and (Tb1-cHoc)Ni-2 are in good agreement with the available experimental data. We also propose a composite material based on the doped compound (Tb1-cHoc)Ni-2 to work as magnetic refrigerant in the temperature range between 15 and 35 K. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd.
