In the next generation wireless networks, multimedia data such as video, voice, and nonreal-time data may play key role in most applications. It is therefore important to provide quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees for these multimedia applications. This paper proposes an adaptive bandwidth (communication channel) reservation scheme in order to provide QoS guarantees for multimedia traffic carried in high-speed wireless cellular networks. For this purpose, the proposed scheme employs user mobility information to reserve available channels for a user from its adjacent cells according to its current position. The degree of channel reservation is determined based on the power levels that the user receives from its adjacent base stations (BSs). The new scheme reduces not only the connection dropping probability but also the call blocking probability significantly compared with other existing algorithms.
