Microscopic examination of paints is a fundamental method used in failure analysis. The ability to capture these images and present them is significant in conveying the unseen elements of the problem. This three-part article discusses the equipment needed to utilize these techniques in analyzing paints. Part 1 (january 2011 MP) described the overall technology; this part covers system design; and Part 3 (March 2011 MP) will present additional design, ethical, and legal concerns, and conclusions.
