Revisiting "Poor Women: Shut Up and Shut Out''

Being asked to reflect on the paper I delivered almost 20 years ago, "Poor Women in Psychological Research: Shut Up and Shut Out" (Reid, 1993), is a rare privilege. I appreciate this opportunity to look back and provide some context for the ideas which were presented in what originated as my presidential address for the American Psychological Association's (APA) Division 35: Division on the Psychology of Women (now known as the Society for the Psychology of Women). It is ironic that this retrospective comes as the United States again feels the press of a deep recession, but it also seems appropriate at this time to consider whether psychological researchers are any more attentive now than we were previously to issues of poverty. © The Author(s) 2011.
