摘要
The recent improvement of the silica aerogel optical properties has firmly assessed the use of this material as radiator of RICH detectors. In this paper the measurements necessary to perform a complete optical characterization of aerogel are reviewed. The results are used to analyze the performance of the focused RICH of HERMES, which is employing a large volume of aerogel produced from Matsushita Co. (Japan) in 1998. Based on this study, the performance of the LHCb focused RICH-1, which will likely employ aerogel produced in BINP (Novosibirsk), are predicted. Finally, recent results from BELLE, suggesting the possible use of aerogel as radiator of a proximity focusing RICH detector, are discussed.
