Renewable energy applications and impacts on environmental protection in Hong Kong

This paper reports part of the investigation results of the building-integrated photovoltaic system in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The world development of solar power generation from photovoltaics is presented. The prospect, policy implications and environmental impact of renewable energy applications are discussed. It is estimated that solar power from building-integrated photovoltaics can satisfy one third of the territory's electricity demand. Significant reduction Of CO2 emission and other pollution contaminants can be achieved. It is concluded that as an only final solution for environmental protection renewable energy application should be encouraged by offering tax credits, financial subsides and other active policy by the local Government and the barrier of the controlled local electric utility industry should be removed through deregulation policy. We should not miss the opportunities for green power generation for business and environment.
