Time-averaged inversion in the one-atom maser

The time-averaged inversion of atoms pumping a one-atom maser is reconsidered. Consistent with a recent study, we find that its value is typically negative if the coupling is to a TM mode of the resonator. A simple explanation for this fact is offered. Further, we observe that a positive value is typical when the atoms couple to a TE mode.
