Application of model-based reasoning to the development of intelligent CAE systems

A general methodology for developing intelligent computer aided engineering (CAE) systems is presented here, based on the authors' observation of several generic features of any CAE and a so-called "model based reasoning (MBR) approach" to knowledge engineering. In particular, a general model is proposed for the architecture of intelligent CAE systems, and MBR is incorporated into the implementation of such systems. To this end, key elements of MBR are illustrated in the context of the development of intelligent CAE systems. A successful implementation of the methodology is reported and taken as a case to explain the proposed methodology. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
