Small-scale field-aligned currents and plasma motion in auroral arcs

摘要
The motion of luminosity inhomogeneities in auroral arcs is investigated on the basis of television data. An original method for processing TV records is proposed for this purpose. Conclusions about the plasma motion character at the opposite edges of the auroral arc are made. The velocity of small-scale plasma formations along an arc is estimated based on TV data. A velocity of about 10 km/s is obtained. It is proposed to explain such a value by the fact that the small-scale electric field is stronger than the medium-scale field. This result agrees with those obtained by other independent methods of investigations.
