In these reflections on Der fliegende Hollander, I define the difference between Heine's and Wagner's versions of the legend in terms of disenchantment and re-enchantment; I show Senta, the "woman of the future," to be the truly modern component of the drama; and I relate the erasure of the name of Heine in Wagner's autobiographical accounts of the work's genesis to his antisemitism.
