On the basis of a short sketch of the present-day situation in the debate on teacher training, the author discusses and evaluates four different developmental options: he deals, first, with the question of a possible transfer of (parts of) teacher training to specific institutions of higher education ("Fachhochschulen"); second, with the recent proposal for a linking of the first phase of teacher training with graded Bachelor/Master courses of studies; and third, with the demand for abolishing state control over university training for teachers. In the fourth and final part, the author explains and advocates an evolutionary development- and optimization-strategy for all phases and institutions of teacher education, as it was developed by the commission 'teacher education' of the standing conference of the ministers of education and science.
