The mechanism for the regulation of cellular functions via the modulation of the structural and functional properties of the proteins were discussed. The phosphorylation resulted in the catalytic inactivation of the enzyme and its degree of phosphorylation was found to be sensitive to the nutrient status of the bacterium. It was shown that the protein phosphorylation emerged as an important regulatory mechanism in the earlier evolutionary time.
