This article presents the community activism of working-class and poor women and offers a reconceptualization of community power in general and women's empowerment in particular. This analysis is done by examining women's involvement in a community coalition in northern Brooklyn and was carried out through the use of interviews, participant observation, and content analysis. Findings indicate that women were empowered by their participation in the coalition and developed a critical consciousness regarding politics, race relations, and feminism.
