Damage analysis of masonry pagodas in Wenchuan earthquake

The damages of masonry pagodas in "5.12" Wenchuan Earthquake are primarily collected, classified and analyzed. The earthquake damages mainly include dropping and deflection of the top, collapse of the upper part of pagoda, vertical cracks along axis and corner cracks, incline of the pagoda and dropping of the dougong and eaves. The earthquake time history analysis of one certain masonry pagoda is carried out. The damages and damage forming mechanism of the pagoda in the different degree earthquake are given. Finally, combining the domestic and foreign repair experience of pagoda, some seismic reinforcement methods are presented, including reinforcement of foundation, cracks grouting, hooping pagoda body, adding ring beams and structural columns, rectification of oblique pagodas.
