Integrating computer applications and GIS into a renewable resources curriculum

Computer applications are a vital component of the Renewable Resources curriculum at the University of Southwestern Louisiana. A new curriculum choice, Environmental and Sustainable Resources, has largely been responsible for emphasizing computer applications. New courses have been introduced in a direct effort to strengthen the new curriculum. Undergraduate course offerings include: (1) Introduction to Computer Applications, (2) Introduction to GIS, and (3) Environment al Modeling and GIS Applications. Design and development of a unique PC Video Classroom (PCVC) concept was the initial phase in course development. Intermediate stages of the new course format included selection, funding and procurement of hardware and software. Ultimate success of the program is dependent upon the last phase, laboratory management and maintenance.
