FOREIGN OBJECT DAMAGE IN CERAMIC MATRIX COMPOSITES AND MONOLITHIC SILICON NITRIDES

摘要
A series of foreign-object-damage (FOD) studies have been conducted on SiC/SiC and oxide/oxide ceramic matrix composites and monolithic silicon nitrides. Targets with different configurations in size, geometry, and support were impacted by 1.59-mm diameter, spherical projectiles of steel, brass, or ceramic at a range of impact velocity of 50 to 440 m/s. FOD phenomena were assessed with impact variables particularly in terms of damage morphology and strength degradation. This paper presents a summary of the impact aspects observed from the composite and monolithic materials investigated to date.
