A method is described to estimate the temperature and pressure drop in a pipeline flowing an oil with strongly temperature dependent viscosity. Results of an analysis with this method are compared to results obtained with a standard steady state, one dimensional, single phase pipeline simulation tool. It is demonstrated how failure to account for radial variations in liquid viscosity may cause the pipeline pressure drop to be grossly underpredicted. The method is illustrated by example of a planned 220 km long North Sea subsea oil export pipeline.
