The Utilities and Energy Management (UEM) department at Texas A&M University (TAMU) has been working to increase efficiency and reduce energy consumption through several initiatives including a combined heat and power (CHP) program. Since its inception in 2002, CHP and other energy conservation activities have saved $106 million and reduced energy consumption per square foot by 35%. The domestic hot water (DHW) system serves 71 buildings and is part of a 45 MW cogeneration system that uses waste steam from electricity generation to heat domestic water. The future feasibility of additions to the DHW system will be considered based on UEM's work establishing a reliable, sustainable DHW system outlined in this article.
