摘要
Chromium oxide coatings deposited on stainless steel substrates by RF reactive magnetron sputtering were tested for their corrosion and ion release behaviour in three physiological solutions. The Raman investigations showed that the coatings were predominantly Cr2O3. The coatings tested in Ringer's and Hank's solutions possess lower defect densities, better corrosion resistance, and lower ion release when compared to those tested in saline solution. The overall minimal chromium ion release from these samples suggests that the coatings have the potential to be used as an implantable coating for orthopaedic implant applications where material degradation and ion release remains a major concern.
