The linear, polarization of non-magnetic cataclysmic variables

摘要
We have searched for broad-band linear polarization in non-magnetic cataclysmic variables by (1) observing eclipses of the nova-like UX UMa, (2) observing the dwarf nova SS Cyg in both quiescence and outburst, and (3) obtaining phase-resolved polarimetry for the old nova V603 Aql. In no case do we observe a change in polarization, our tightest limits being at the similar to 0.01 per cent level. The limits are dose to the changes predicted by theory, showing that the polarization in these objects is not significantly greater than theory suggests.
