Statistical analysis of wave loads on ships is important in establishing the wave load design criteria. This paper applies the peaks-over-threshold method in studying the statistics of the wave-induced bending moments in ships of various types under various loading conditions. The generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) are used for representing the wave load peak values exceeding a high threshold level. The selection of threshold and estimation of GPD shape parameter and extreme values are discussed. The study reveals that the distributions of the wave-induced bending moments are super-exponential for all ship types. The estimated extreme values based on GPD agree well with those based on Weibull distribution.
