A new non-coherent demodulation scheme for IR-UWB

Coherent detection schemes encounter formidable implementation challenges such as stringent synchronization and channel estimation, and ultra-fast analog to digital converters (ADC) in impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) communications. On the other hand, non-coherent receivers were proposed to trade off the detection performance for reduced complexity. In this paper, we propose a new non-coherent demodulation scheme based on energy detection. The scheme effectively alleviate the noise and interference without sacrificing the energy efficiency. To increase the data rate, we propose to use block-coded modulation. Performance evaluation shows that our non-coherent demodulation scheme, in combination with block-coded modulation, provides robust performance even in the presence of strong inter-frame interference and multi-user interference.
