The effects of thermal treatment on the structure of Cu-Zn-Al alloys

The effects of various quenching condition (direct quenching, up-quenching and step-quenching) and aging treatments at temperatures in the range 200 to 5000 degreesC for times up to 30 hours have been studied on two Cu-Zn-Al shape memory alloys. In order to analyze the effects of performed aging; we realized the measuring of the time dependence of hardness, martensitic transformation temperatures and shape memory recovery and also X-ray diffraction experiment. The aging times required at each temperature to initiate change in hardness and shape memory recovery of specimens which were previously quenched in different conditions, conformed approximately with Arrhenius relationship. Neither a-precipitates coarsening nor gamma -precipitates formation was observed.
