The effect of SiC addition on the superconducting properties of MgB2 tapes fabricated through an ex situ process using chemically treated powder

We have studied the effect of SiC addition on the superconducting properties of Fe-sheathed MgB2 tapes fabricated using powder with chemical treatment through an ex situ process in a powder-in-tube (PIT) technique. Compared with the MgB2 powder without chemical treatment, the treatment drastically increases both the transport critical current density ( Jc) values and the pinning force in high magnetic fields. On the other hand, the SiC addition improves the transport Jc values by about 20% in a 10 T field and does not cause appreciable enhancement in the pinning force for tapes using the MgB2 powder with chemical treatment. This is because the carbon substitution does not take place by SiC addition.
