摘要
This paper investigates the application of multilevel inverter as STATCOM to compensate the reactive power for railways power grid. The analysis of reactive power compensation on the voltage profile of real railway power grid presents a main guide for sizing the STATCOM compensator. In the paper, the concept and design details of the multilevel inverter as STATCOM for the railways system is discussed. The control system of the designed STATCOM is provided to adjust the compensated reactive power to regulate the system voltage at the common coupling point. The control system includes the ability to control the reactive power needed to compensate the voltage of STATCOM capacitor. The performance of the overall system is evaluated during steady state and transient conditions to prove the ability of the proposed STATCOM to improve the railway power grid power quality with proper control response.
