摘要
Over-the-counter analgesics have a major role in the treatment of primary headache disorders, particularly in an era of cost consciousness and increasing self-care. Most patients with headaches treat themselves without consulting a physician and have never received prescription medications for their headaches. Over-the-counter analgesics are generally safe and can contribute to cost-effective treatment. Physicians and patients must be aware of the hazards of inappropriate use, including adverse events, rebound headache, and potentially hazardous drug interactions. Physicians can have an important role in educating patients about the selection of nonprescription analgesics and in fostering reasonable use of over-the-counter analgesic products.
