The prospects of the single European currency, its impact on the economy of the euro zone, and its role in the international currency market-these issues are the subject of both professional and broader public interest. The author of this paper focuses on the process of formation of the euro as a global currency that could become and, in some ways, has already become an alternative to the US dollar.
