Due to film, montage is the aesthetic form characterising 20(th) century cultural modernity. The transfer of montage into other media and forms of representation like music and text can be analysed. During the media upheavals of 1900 and 2000, the crisis of representation becomes more acute: accumulation and innovation of media render the reference of media to reality, sign to object, signifiant to signifie problematic. The > musicalisation < of montage reacts to this process because music as an a-mimetic medium is particularly qualified to represent the > virtual reality < of media cultures. As opposed to a visual representation of reality, the reflection of montage as a musical form established in theoretical and fictional texts emphasises the contrast and the difference of media as > assemblage of heterogeneous elements <.
