Carotid-cavernous fistulas are abnormal connections between the carotid arterial system and the cavernous sinus. As the cavernous sinus receives most of the venous outflow from the globes and the orbits, the clinical manifestations of carotid-cavernous fistulas are primarily ophthalmological. The diagnosis and management of carotid-cavernous fistulas often involve collaboration between neuro-ophthalmologists, interventional radiologists, and neurosurgeons. This article reviews current concepts essential to all specialists who treat patients with carotid-cavernous fistulas.
