In New Caledonia, a weathering profile developed on a nickeliferous ultramafic rock was examined in order to characterize the behaviour of iron oxides (goethite and hematite). Optical microscopy coupled with mineralogy and chemistry allow us to recognize the vertical trend of the profile and to propose the main weathering processess. Aluminium and nickel could extent a chemical control on the changes in iron oxides.
