In all aspects of medical virology, bacteriology and parasitology the application of nucleic acid diagnostics is on the increase, This review does not focus on the use of nucleic acids in mere diagnostics, but summarizes the current state of affairs in molecular microbial epidemiology, the tracking of strains of medically relevant microorganisms with the help of DNA/RNA analysis.
