Crosstalk in 3D-TV: Modeling, Adaptive Cancellation Algorithms and Perceptual Validation

Visible crosstalk in the display of stereoscopic images via the shutter glasses 3D-TV approach impacts viewer comfort and image quality. Crosstalk in shutter glasses 3D-TV is more complex than the simple extinction ratio-based crosstalk in passive-glasses systems. We provide a new crosstalk characterization that identifies fully correctible and not fully correctible pixel pairs. A crosstalk cancellation technique derived from crosstalk characterization and distance minimization criterion is developed and evaluated perceptually. Crosstalk remains when the image contains pixel pairs outside the fully correctible range. Crosstalk removal through image processing has been proposed previously, but unfortunately with negative impact on image quality. We propose an adaptive preprocessing algorithm for removal of crosstalk while reducing impact on image quality.
