摘要
Expressways in Japan, some of the graphical symbols on VMS are difficult to comprehend. To design easy-tounderstand symbols for drivers, the referents of the symbols should appropriate. The referents must be understandable and be equipped concrete elements that can be drawn as the pictures. Therefore, to investigate the understandability of traffic events that are current referents and whether these could be replaced by more concrete words, we analyzed the images related to traffic events that were analogized by drivers. From these results, we concluded that the causal relationships of the information related to traffic event should be grasped structurally for the establishment of the referent.
