The problems of and solutions to requirements acquisition and product selection of a commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS) software are presented including lessons learned during the process. These include: a more detailed requirements acquisition to effectively discriminate between products; requirements must be measurable to enable product selection; use of software prototypes to aid generation of test cases; structuring of requirements for easier test case formulation; difficulty product scope to be defined; necessary presence of the stakeholders during evaluation; problematic weighting requirements for product selection; and suppliers convincing sales pitch.
