Experimental verification of the GDH sum rule at ELSA and MAMI

In order to verify the GDH sum rule for the first time the GDH-Collaboration measures the total photoabsorption cross section of circularly polarized real photons on longitudinally polarized nucleons in the photon energy range 0.14 - 3.1 GeV. These measurements are being pursued at the two electron accelerators MAMI in Mainz and ELSA in Bonn. The experimental setup of the ongoing data taking campaign is described and results for the proton up to 1.9 GeV are presented.
