A comparison of oxidative metabolism in schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder and healthy controls

Objective: Relationship between oxidative metabolism and psychiatric disorders has been researched in several studies. We aimed to investigate oxidative metabolism in schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder and healthy controls in the present study. Method: 30 schizophrenia, 30 schizoaffective, 30 bipolar patients and 30 healthy controls were included the study. Total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant status (TAS) were measured in the collected blood samples and oxidative stress index was calculated. The four groups were compared. Results: TOS and OSI were higher in schizoaffective patients than schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and controls. There was no difference in the TAS between groups. Conclusions: Increased TOS in schizoaffective disorder indicate that schizoaffective disorder is a different illness from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in regard to oxidative metabolism.
