摘要
An upper-division Spanish class combining theoretical on literacy and hands-on tutoring at reading programs for Spanish-speaking adults is presented as a model for a course with service learning. Undergraduates gain both theoretical and practical knowledge of key issues concerning literacy while providing a needed service to neglected segment of the community. Additional benefits include increased communicative competence and cultural awareness and a greater sense of civic and social responsibility.
