We discuss the advantages of various kinds of light modulators with respect to Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) in terms of potential reliability, radiation hardness, and low power consumption. We also discuss free space optical links which could use these modulators as well as MEMS mirrors and other technology which we are developing. (c) 2012 Published by Elsevier B.V.
