Optimization of fiber composition in natural fiber-reinforced composites using a simplex lattice design

Natural fiber-reinforced composites were prepared using jute, sisal, and coir fibers as the reinforcement and polypropylene as the matrix. Fiber proportion was varied as a part of the experimental design and composites were characterized for mechanical properties. A set of simple expressions were obtained for predicting the tensile properties of the composites as a function of the weight fraction of fibers in the blends. The predicted results of tensile properties of the composites were found in good agreement with the experimental results. It was observed that the composite made up of about 66% sisal fibers and 34% coir fibers showed optimum tensile properties.
