Supplying the world population with food energy from arable land Today as in the past, the hunger in the world is constantly being used as a reason for developing fresh strategies for land management and food production. The baseline for such strategies is the global potential for producing food energy whose parameters are: an area of arable land which in recent years has remained constant at 1.4 billion ha., a rising yield per hectare, which since 1960 has brought about a doubling of the grain harvest for an almost constant area of cultivation, changing eating habits, and a rise in primary production which has outpaced the growth in population. In the individual regions, agrar-ecological restrictions on land management are being intensified. Hence environmentally friendly farming is recommended as a strategy for land management, which should especially embrace integrated and ecological methods of farming. Model calculations based on 13 hypotheses regarding food-energy production have shown that in the 21st century the production of food energy from cultivated land will still be able to match the qualitative and quantitative demands of the expected world population.
