Structural elucidation of acrylic-grafted polyester and the particle of its aqueous dispersion was carried out. The amount of the acrylics grafted to the polyesters was determined. The side chains grafted to the polyester were separated by the hydrolysis of the polyester segments. The structure of the acrylic-grafted polyester was estimated fi om the results of the characterization. Observation of the particles of the aqueous dispersion obtained from the grafted polymers was carried oat, and it suggested that a shell layer existed on Me particle. Dissolved states of each segment of the grafted polymer during the dispersing process were determined by C-13 nuclear magnatic resonance. Finally, Me mechanism of particle formation fi om the grafted polymers was discussed. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
