Temperature dependence of the magnetic-field-induced strain of NiMnGa in the presence of an acoustic drive

A small amplitude acoustic signal was applied to a Ni-Mn-Ga single crystal. The effect of the acoustic signal in enhancing the magnetic-field-induced strain was measured as a function of temperature over the range of 1-35 degrees C below the austenite-start temperature. Strain output was found to decrease with decreasing temperature as a result of lowered twin-boundary mobility. The combination of a piezoelectric drive with the magnetic drive yields an improvement in strain response for all temperatures investigated; however, the piezoenhanced, field-induced strain is maximized at 12.5 degrees C, where partial derivative epsilon/partial derivative T is maximum.
