With 23 million inhabitants, Romania is Central Europe's second largest market after Poland. However, according to a report in RTD Info, a magazine on research and technological development supported by the European Union, the transition of this country towards a liberalised economy is proving complicated Research funding represented 0.58% of GDP in 1997 compared with 1.33% in 1990. But the country's S&T potential is important and of a high-level.
