摘要
We investigate the dominant mode of star formation in late-type galaxies using an analysis of the distribution of star formation timescales (stellar masses/star formation rates) for 117 Im and Sm galaxies. We find that these galaxies could have produced their stellar mass by extrapolation of their current rate of growth over a Hubble time. No quiescent galaxies are found, supporting continuous rather than "bursty" modes of star formation. The spatial distributions of new and old populations are mutually consistent in these late-type galaxies and the optical-to-near-infrared colors are as expected from continuous star formation activity.
