Waste can be the difference between success and failure in business. Most plants track waste. This effort is often part of the total quality program to ensure production of products as planned. Such programs often result in continuous improvements of the existing process, but they seldom look beyond the inherent limitations of the process. This paper addresses some accepted limitations by noting their costs and how new technology can be a cost-effective method to increase productivity. It examines specific sections of a basic extrusion coating line. Possible disadvantages of each solution will evaluate the feasibility of the solutions. Each section will have a variety of equipment, controls, or source ideas to give several alternatives.
