摘要：
This paper examines the renewable energy potential in India with special reference to the electricity sector, captures its perspectives through SWOT analysis and explores the possibilities of tailoring renewable energy to a sustainable development programme, Analysing the prospects sectorally, the paper concludes with a set of strategies and policy initiatives required for increased utilization of renewable energies aiming towards their gradual transition from mere additions to alternatives within a total energy mix that is more favourably disposed towards sustainable development.
