THE TEXTBOOK - WHAT'S THE FUTURE

The textbook has been used as a teaching instrument for hundreds of years, and it's a fundamental element of School, just like the blackboard or even the teachers and students. Nowadays, both the concept of the textbook and the object to which it refers are changing: mostly adapting to the latest technological development, and also as response to the latest teaching-learning methodologies. This article elaborates on; a) some of the characteristics of the traditional printed textbook; b) the contemporary digital tools which are being used to replace or complement it; c) advantages and disadvantages of the digital textbook; d) the features that digital textbooks should provide within the newer paradigms in learning, as well as the role of the teacher regarding the educational use of digital resources.
