Based on the National Land Use/Cover Database of China (NLUD-C), urban land situation of China in three time nodes (i.e. the end of 1980s, 2000 and 2010) were selected and described, as well as the growth rate of two time periods (Le. the end of 1980s-2000, 2000-2010) were calculated. The rationality of land urbanization in China was analyzed by comparing the growth rate of population urbanization with the growth rate of urban land in the two time periods listed above. Several results were obtained: 1) in the 1980s-2000 and 2000-2010, urban land increased by 34.55% and 109.84%, and population urbanization increased by 37.15% and 37.91%, respectively. The ratio of urban land growth rate and population urbanization growth rate (ratio) increased from 0.92 to 2.91 in the two time periods; 2) in the 1980s-2000 and 2000-2010, the ratio of Beijing and Tianjin was the maximum, while Fujian and Hebei was the minimum, respectively; 3) in the 1980s-2000, there were only 9 provinces and municipalities and autonomous regions, of which the ratio more than 1, in 2000-2010, the number increased to 27.
